8th Newsletter (sept 16-20)

Here are this week's updates!

UPDATES/ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1. Active Shooter Training & Walking Tour of Neighborhood

This summer, SJA staff went to the ALICE training to prepare and follow the protocol of Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate in the case of a violent intruder/active shooter.

This Thursday, the 7th & 8th grade students and teachers will be taking a walking field trip to La Vida Del Mar Retirement Community (down the street on Del Mar Downs) and to : Circle (on the other side of campus). Both locations have been designated as possible safe zones should our campus be involved in a Violent Intruder or Active Shooter scenario. Permission slips were sent home today. Please return them ASAP.

We will be discussing the protocol with the students on Wednesday. Please be aware that students may have follow-up questions for you at home and remind them that SJA is a safe place to learn, but we want to be prepared. Please reach out if you have any questions.

2. A message from Mrs. Oldham: CHOIR

Students in 7th and 8th Grade interested in participating in the SJA Spirit Choir and Band are invited to an introductory meeting and rehearsal this week Thursday. Below is a preliminary schedule, more details to come.

Thur, Sept. 19, 3-4 pm: Introduction/Registration/Rehearsal

Thur, Sept. 26: NO rehearsal (I will be in Washington DC for the US Dept. of Education Green Ribbon award ceremony!)

Thur, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 3-4pm: Rehearsals

Sun, Oct 13 5:30-7:00 pm Second Sunday Mass NEW time

Thur, Oct 31 NO Rehearsal (Halloween!)

2. High School Visits!

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to drive for our upcoming high school visits! We have confirmed Saints/OLP for Thurs, Oct 10. & the CCHS visit is Tues, Oct 29. We do need more drivers. Please contact me if interested/available!

3. Volunteer Opportunities for SERVICE HOURS

Mission Circle Food Packaging Event Sunday, October 13

On October 13, volunteers come together to assemble 54,000 highly nutritious, protein-fortified meals that will reverse the effects of malnutrition and starvation. Each package contains six meals and is made up of rice, lentils, dried vegetables, and 22 essential vitamins and minerals. Most of the meals will be shipped to feed the hungry in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A small portion will remain in San Diego to feed the hungry locally. Cookies for Kairos-CALLING ALL BAKERS!

Kairos is a 4 day Christian Retreat designed for prison inmates. It is held twice a year at RJ Donovan State Prison in San Ysidro. About 100 prisoners are invited to take part in the retreat each time. As you can imagine, for many of the men in prison, Jesus Christ and Christianity are far from their minds. To encourage them to attend, we tell them that they will get to eat as many homemade cookies as they like! Often, this is the only reason that they come. But once they are on the retreat, they are treated with respect and dignity, and watch the Holy Spirit change their hearts. And yes, they can eat as many of your cookies as they like! With help from other parishes and churches, we are hoping to provide over 4,000 dozen cookies, please help! Each dozen cookies should be sealed in a gallon Ziploc bag and can be dropped off before or after school on October 11 in the carpool line or dropped off in the front office anytime on Friday, 10/11. Cookies can also be dropped off at any mass on 10/12-13.
